Greenhill Academy Champions Mental Wellness During Mental Health Week

Theme: Building Blocks to a Mentally Well Greenhill Community

Greenhill Academy successfully concluded its Mental Health Week with a powerful call for every member of the school community to intentionally build and protect their mental wellbeing. Organized by the Counselling Department, the week-long programme was designed to promote emotional wellness, strengthen supportive relationships, and create a school environment where every learner feels valued, heard, and supported.

The activities officially began with a launch on Monday, 13th July, setting the tone for a series of engaging and meaningful events. Throughout the week, selected departments participated in focus group discussions that explored mental wellness challenges and practical ways of supporting one another. Peer Counsellors also played a central role by continuously engaging fellow students in conversations about emotional wellbeing, resilience, and seeking help when needed.

One of the week's most memorable activities was the Random Acts of Appreciation Day, where students and staff intentionally encouraged and appreciated one another, reinforcing the importance of kindness, gratitude, and positive relationships. Students also participated enthusiastically in a Treasure Hunt, an activity that combined teamwork, problem-solving, and fun while promoting social interaction and collaboration.

The celebrations culminated in a colourful Mental Wellness Assembly on Monday, 20th July, attended by invited guests, parents, administrators, staff, and students. The assembly was led by the school's Peer Counsellors, members of the Students' Council, and the SWAS Club under the guidance of the School Counsellors: Mrs. Sandra Drile, Mr. Michael Lugonjo, and Mrs. Gladys Wakoko.

The Chief Guest, Ms. Cathy Osiru, Head of School at Greenhill International School, delivered an inspiring keynote address centred on the building blocks and pillars of mental health. She encouraged students to intentionally develop qualities that strengthen emotional wellbeing, including self-awareness, empathy, active listening, acceptance, effective communication, community support, and integrity.

Using a simple yet powerful illustration, Ms. Osiru compared mental health to carrying a school bag. She held up an empty bag, explaining that although emotions cannot be seen, they are always present. She then contrasted it with a heavily loaded bag, demonstrating how unresolved emotions, worries, and stress gradually accumulate and become overwhelming when left unaddressed. Her message reminded students that while emotional burdens may not always be visible, they are real and should never be ignored. She encouraged learners to speak up, seek support early, and make use of the healthy coping strategies available within the school community.

The Mental Health Week reinforced Greenhill Academy's commitment to nurturing not only academic excellence but also the emotional, social, and psychological wellbeing of every learner. Through open conversations, peer support, and practical activities, students were reminded that a mentally healthy community is built through everyday acts of compassion, understanding, honesty, and mutual respect.

Greenhill Academy extends its sincere appreciation to the Board of Governors, the Administration, and Senior Management for their continued commitment to promoting the mental wellness of the entire school community. Their support reflects the school's belief that caring for the mind is just as important as nurturing academic achievement.

Together, Greenhill Academy continues to build a stronger, healthier, and more compassionate community—one block at a time.
